Haven’t been there – but I have seen it from the SF area.
Like Mary, I’ve seen it multiple times, but have never gone through it.
only once but when I was in grammar school it was still a prison and I went to school with some of the children of the guards who lived on the island. I was invited to come and visit but never did. I’m sorry about that now!
Visiting my aunt Charlotte and uncle Ted about fifty years ago, we stood on the shore watching the animals and looking at the island in the distance…
I’ve toured it twice, once in the early 1970s and again in the early 1980s. Never toured at night though. That would be an interesting experience.
The one time I was there, there was a woman who had written a book about growing up on the Island who was supposedly autographing her books in the gift shop. She was on a break but I was able to get her contact information and I wrote to her after I got home. I discovered she had been a good friend of my sister’s.
Not Alcatraz. I did tour Clinton Prison. Perhaps better known as Little Siberia or Dannemora Prison. The wall is on the main street of the village.
Not pretty.
