Just keep swimming

I can’t imagine not knowing how to swim, I took lessons for most of my childhood. Do you know how to swim? Did you take lessons, or just learn on your own?

I’ve been swimming all my life. Can’t remember when I learned, maybe early school years. I go to a water exercise class 3 days week.

I actually love to swim, though I haven’t in years. Long Island Sound is too dirty for real swimming, and most of the gyms — not even nearby — have removed their pools to make room for more exercise machines.

As a child I wasn’t very athletic and my parents were afraid I would not learn to swim — unthinkable when you live near the water. So they asked the PE director at the Jewish Center to teach me; I had free private lessons. (Imagine that happening now!) I’ll never be a champion swimmer, but I did pass the requisite swimming test when I was in college.

My father taught me to swim as a young child–can’t remember how young, but younger than 10. I hadn’t been in a pool in literally decades, but got into a hotel pool about 4 years ago. I was surprised that (a) I could still swim, and (b) felt uncomfortable doing it since it had been such a long time.

I was taught to swim when I was about 10 years old. I’m not very good at it but neither of my parents could swim and my mother almost drowned (as a child) a couple of times. I don’t care for diving and I can’t stand having water in my ears. Needless to say, I don’t swim much. We never spent time at the beach as a family when I was growing up so my lessons pretty much went unused until I was a junior in high school and went to a friend’s house that was at the local lake.

A few lessons as a kid, but mostly on my own. I am not a good swimmer.
