It's not perfect but emergency care and the treatment of serious diseas/illness are generally dealt with very well. It's the piddly wee stuff where most of the frustrations are found. Yes, the NHS* is sometimes abused by people - but I'd rather that happened than people be denied access to medical care on the grounds of affordability. And yes, we all have to pay for it via our taxes and national insurance but I'd rather do that than have the less fortunate denied care. We have private healthcare here too. People have used it as a crutch for not maintaining their own health, knowing some insurance company will pony up the bucks to fix whatever self inflicted ailment comes along. I am not completely without compassion, however. Should there be insurance for catastrophic illnesses and injuries? Yes. Should there be insurance for every single doctors visit? Absolutely not. I know the arguments about preventative medicine...but the numbers do not add up. Printing & borrowing more money to throw at it does not solve the problem. A Pennsylvannia congressman said recently, " We have the best health plan in the world." He was right. Congress does have the best health plan in the world. The average american is not so fortunate. We rank 37th in the world. We are catching up with Costa Rica and the Dominican Republic. We are ahead of Croatia and Slovenia. What we are good at is R and D. We do have about the best doctors in the world. The medicine is good. The doctors are good. Sadly these things are out of reach for many americans. As for the Obama health plan, I will be surprised if it passes. If it does, it will be so watered down that the average american will probably lose ground on the deal. It is going to be expensive. It isn't going to be cheaper next year. Helath care has been on the stove since Truman was president. The Republicans put it on the back burner. The democrats put on the cooker. It has been that way for 60 years. I don't see anything being changed in the next 8 years.
