My husband watched a show yesterday about travelling to Mars. What is your opinion on space exploration?

I seem to be in hyper-cynical mode today.
My first thought about space travel is – what a bloomin’ waste of money.
We have millions of people on this planet who are starving to death and/or dying of preventable diseases.
Lets sort our own planet first, before we go buggering up anyone else’s.
Then there’s a small bit of me that thinks Wow! The possibilities of what’s really out there are fascinating.
And I’ll grant that space scientists have done some interesting experiments while they were up there – though I can’t actually think of one at the moment.

I don’t think you have to be hyper-cynical to wonder about the wisdom of spending millions and millions of dollars to scratch at a speck of dirt on Mars when we have so many problems here that haven’t been solved.
A $100,000 bag of space tools free-floating in orbit now because of one astronuat’s clumsiness (“Oops…..sorrrry! My bad!”)?????? Pleeeeaaase!
What could $100,000 worth of tools from Sears could do for villages in Africa or for low income areas here?
The IDEA of space exploration is certainly uplifting, intriguing and exciting for new generations of explorers and scientists, and it may eventually lead to developments that we can’t even begin to imagine.
We don’t know what is to come 50 or 100 years from now.
What if in the 1950′s someone said…”I know…we’ll have TV and phones and tracking devices all linked up with those new-fangled satellite things that they’re launching into space! The phones will be so small you can carry them in your pocket and use them in the car! And you can have a computer in your house!!”
The problem is, I don’t know how much good it’s doing us here and now.
it may be a long term gamble.

i understand the importance of doing it but i don’t understand why so much is spent on it when so many are in financial trouble. i have no idea how many jobs would be lost if the budget were to be slashed.
To infinity and beyond.

Yeah, I’m in the camp that says “WOW! We DID that!” and then thinks “what could we have done if we had used the money for starving people here on earth.
That said, if they ever invent a transporter for real, I’m there, babe!

I think it’s pretty awesome. Then again I’m a Cornellian, home of the Mars Rover!
Wonderful new look!

A bit of the fence. But the show was fascinating.

I think space needs to be explored and we need to find an alternative home once the resources on earth have been depleted. But it does bother me that so much money is spent with so little information in return.

NASA employs half our town – and I’m a space geek – so I say, “Rock on, NASA!” Go find us some alien life forms!

I would love to be able to do it – to see the earth from out there and see what other planets have – to walk on the moon! WOW!
