One syllable, five letters, very easy.
But people still say things like “That’s two T’s right?”
    Duh…….

  2. Indigo says:

Very uncommon, a 10. But since we have a business with the same name people at least know how to pronounce it most of the time.

  3. Jon says:

My last name ranks in the 80′s this country. That would make it a 1 or possibly a 2. pretty common Irish/English name. Hemlock, (not my real name) is very rare.

  4. CityGirl says:

According to namestatistics.com my surname ranks 6,324th in the US, with .002% of people here sharing it.
    I’d call that a 10.

However, in Chicago, it is completely common and people pronounce it easily.
In Alabama? Not so much. I very well may be the only “-ski” in Dixie.

  5. Bev says:

Well my name is really my husband’s name. I don’t know how common it is, but I do know that NOBODY can pronounce or spell it. Everybody seems to see S-Y-K-E-S and read “skies.” It is also more often spelled “Sikes” than “Sykes.” Sikes is the bad guy in Oliver Twist, so I resent the misspelling! My maiden name was West. Hard to mess that up!

  7. Jennifer says:

TOTALLY a 10. I’m pretty sure my sister still can’t spell it, and I’ve been married 8 years. Add my maiden name in it, which I kept, and forget it. Although my Polish maiden name is prounounced like it’s spelled, everyone wants to make it French. And nobody believes there can be that many y’s in my husband’s last name.

On a side note, when we went to South Africa, because of the large Dutch population, EVERYONE knew how to spell our name correctly when we said it. It was quite refreshing.

  9. Bev says:

When we were in college we had a Ukranian friend. Whenever we went to a restaurant, we put the reservation in his name, whether he was there or not. His name? Hornjatkewyc

  10. Jon says:

We had a lot of Polish people in our town. Most of them I could spell with practice. We had one polish name that had 13 letter. it started with W end Z and had a J. I think there was 9 vowels.

  11. kathi says:

My surname (husband’s surname) is Wilson. It’s usually in the top 10 most common surnames in the U.S., so I’d say that’s a clear “1″. My maiden name is of Japanese origin, so not common in the U.S., but the 20th most common surname in Japan.

  12. Stephie says:

I think it’s a pretty common name (especially in New England/the northeast) but people misspell and mispronounce it all the time. I’m used to it but it’s still annoying sometimes.

  13. Stephie says:

    Forgot the rating, I’d say a 5.

  14. va bene says:

It’s a pretty uncommon last name (#23821- thanks Jon!), but only in it’s spelling. The pronunciation is of a much more common last name, and only varies from the spelling by a letter.

  15. SCY says:

I’m also around an 8 or so – here are my stats:

CURLEY is the #2518 most common last name
0.005% of last names in the US are CURLEY.
Around 12500 people have CURLEY as a last name!

It’s even less common in my country of birth which is South Africa – there are probably about 25 of us here!
