That’s My Answer!

Tendrils asked…… Surprise! Has anyone ever thrown a surprise party for you? If so, what was it for? Were you surprised? On the flip side, have you ever thrown a surprise party for someone else? How did that go?

Excellent question, and I’m sad to say that I’ve never had a surprise party, nor have I ever thrown a surprise party for someone. I was responsible for escorting my best friend to her surprise baby shower once. I couldn’t come up with a good reason for us to be about 40 miles from where we were, so I took her shopping at the mall then blurted out “by the way your mom is having a surprise baby shower for you in about 30 minutes, I’m in charge of getting you there”. Pretty subtle, huh?

That’s my answer, what’s yours?

I’ve done both – been the recipient and the party planner.

The Hubby surprised me for my 30th birthday (but I found out secretly, on my own, about a week prior).

I threw him one for his 40th birhtday…

We have had a lot of fun with both! (And I’m glad I found out about my party ahead of time, as it allowed me to dress appropriately.)

No one’s ever thrown a surprise party for me, and I’m totally ok with that.

I’ve thrown a few surprise parties for people. The most successful was for a roommate many, many years ago. When we all jumped out of the bedroom and yelled “Surprise,” she screamed, tried to escape and fell on her tush. Funniest thing she ever did. Once she recovered, she decided it was a pretty good surprise.

(sigh,) No, to both. I’d Love one but I don’t ever see it in my Future…

I’ve been the recipient of a surprise party- several times. I think people just like my reaction. I had one for my 17th birthday, my 26th, and once my parents surprised me when I lived out of town. The one I wasn’t surprised on was the 26th. I knew about that one but didn’t let on.

The very best party I ever threw was a surprise party for my husband’s 50th. It was held in the local theatre (my kids worked there). He thought he was going to a concert that our kids’ band was giving and actually paid to get in. The band was playing when he arrived and when they finished, my son announced that it was a surprise party. People from all across his life came and it was a 2 hour roast, with him sitting on a gigantic chair (part of the set for “The Nutcracker”) wearing a cape and crown from a Gilbert & Sullivan show. A friend who was a state assemblywoman presented him with a proclamation declaring it Walt Sykes day in California, someone he hadn’t seen in more than 30 years was there. The whole thing was absolutely incredible. I told him I’d given him his last party because there was no way I could top that one!

I’ve been the recipient and the giver. I have given a 30th party for my hubby (before we were married) and a 50th for my mom. Both were VERY surprised! Then, My mom had a 30th for me a few years ago……. I had an inkling, but I was surprised!

My bridal shower a few months ago was sort of a surprise. I knew it was coming, but I didn’t know when, where, or who would be there. My mom flew out “just to visit” for a weekend, which also happened to be the weekend Erin flew out “for business,” so I thought that was a little suspicious. Then there was the really awkward moment near the entrance when everyone starting insisting that I walk ahead of them so I could be the first in the door. I’ve never been in the center of attention that much, so it was surreal but very touching! I’ve never arranged one for someone else.

My husband did a sort of surprise birthday party for me — I think it was for my 40th. Fortunately, for us all, he was forced to tell me what was up, as I’d about decided I didn’t want to go out that day. I really hate surprises, of almost any kind. However, with just a bit of notice I enjoyed the party a lot and I don’t think anyone else knew I new ahead of time. I never threw one for anybody myself; it’s just too much planning for my lack of organization. I’ve participated in a couple thrown for other people and it always surprises me that the recipient doesn’t scream and run away.
