Do you prefer to go on an organized tour or be your own tour guide?

  1. On holidays in Australia I’m happy to be my own tour guide. When overseas, I wouldn’t use a ‘tour guide’ but I would prefer to travel with a local.

The only way I’d consider a tour guide is if it weren’t safe to go it alone. Otherwise, we do enough research ahead of time and wing it as we go.

A little of both. I like to take a short guided tour (To find out anything that might not be in the tour books/on the internet/etc) and then I want time to explore on my own. I lived in St Augustine, FL for 3 years during college and a few years ago when I went there with a group of friends who wanted to do a guided tour. I found out things on the tour that I never new about some of the historical places.

  4. I like a little of both as well. I like to find “treasures” on my own and also have someone tell me things about the area and its history.

I’m with Nicole on this one.
A few years ago hubby and I took the “touristy” guided tour of Charleston SC.
    We had a wonderful time.
We saw tons of stuff that we wouldn’t have seen on our own even though Charleston is just a short day trip from here and we feel quite comfortable going there for a lunch day trip.

(BTW Nicole….I went to St Augustine for a day…loved it but it absolutely POURED all day and the only thing we got to see was Ripley’s………)

I’m with those who like both. I do like having a guide that can show me the highlights, but I really would like to have time on my own to explore and find my own special things.
