Turning the Tables: Wild Life

wildbill has asked me:

Do you feed wild birds, deer or other animals?

I don’t, but that’s because I have two big dogs and they’d cause such a ruckus in the house if we had a feeder. We do have a family of turkeys that live across the street in the industrial park, and my neighbors through the backyard have feeders out for them. We have a fenced-in back yard, so we don’t feed the turkeys too, but we do enjoy watching them. One morning I woke up, stumbled to the backdoor still half asleep and just as I let my dog out I noticed the turkey was IN OUR BACK YARD. I was terrified that my Boxer would maul it, but that turkey flew up and over the fence, and ran back across the street (looking both ways first, seriously) to safety.

I used to have a bird feeder, but I could never see it from the house, so I never remembered to fill it. but I have enough “wild dogs”(some of which actually belong to me) to feed!

    I feed the hummingbirds regularly.
I built bird feeders and had them hanging everywhere to feed the other birds but I wound up feeding every single greedy bird in the county.
The blue jays would line up like they were in the traffic pattern at the Atlanta airport.
It was getting messy, time consuming and expensive so I had to quit.
They can fend for themselves for a while.
I may give them some sunflower seeds and suet when the weather starts to get cooler.
But only if they can behave themselves.

I feed the hummingbirds too. I would like to feed more birds but there are so many neighborhood cats, I’m afraid the birds would get eaten.

I myself have 2 feeders, a family of wils turkeys, 2-5 deer and the occasional crow. I go through about 20 lds of seed a week. Good thing it’s fairly inexpensive.

Yes we used to. We used to feed the birds, squirrels, raccoons, etc. We don’t anymore since the squirrels got a little out of hand. One of them a few years ago snuck up into my car engine and chewed it’s way through some cords. Had to replace the engine (and toasted the squirrel in the process when I started the car). We don’t feed them anymore.
